The CUNA Community Credit Union Committee Releases New White Paper, “Effective Credit Union Board Succession Planning: New Demands Shine Spotlight on Standard Practices”

CUNA announced the release of the new white paper, “Effective Credit Union Board Succession Planning” commissioned by CUNA’s Community Credit Union Committee. This study examines the current demographics of community credit union board members, the issues that arise from these findings and strategies for successful board succession and retention.

This newly released white paper evaluates the changing demographics of community credit union board members and reveals that most credit unions do not have a reliable system for attracting the next generation of board members. Furthermore, many boards struggle to reflect the growing diversity of their members, with women and minorities being underrepresented. Through a series of credit union case studies and a list of expert recommendations, this white paper illustrates how successful board succession planning looks in the real world, what credit unions can do to reverse certain negative trends and provides concrete instructions for how credit unions can prepare for the future. Some examples include:

• Creation of an associate director program

• (Re)consideration of term limits

• Development of an “evergreen” list

• Continuing education requirements

Hawaii credit unions offer free tax preparation to qualified residents

Hawaii credit unions are again providing free tax preparation services to their members and communities. Hawaii Alliance for Community-Based Economic Development (HACBED) and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has partnered with credit unions to train, certify, and equip managers and staff to prepare tax returns.

HACBED is offering an incentive savings program for new savings accounts opened at participating credit unions. The National Credit Union Administration is alerting qualified tax payers of credit union locations providing tax assistance.

“We encourage people to seek out credit unions providing this free service rather to avoid paying preparation fees and expensive refund anticipation loans,” said Hawaii Credit Union League Member Relations Officer Kathy Morris. “The efforts of eight participating credit unions during last year’s tax season generated over $1.1 million dollars of which over $280,000 were in EITC claims alone. Those funds come back into Hawaii’s economy and that’s a win-win for all.”
