Kamehameha FCU powered up for National Credit Union Youth Savings Month

The Credit Union National Association’s National Credit Union Youth Week is an effort to promote healthy savings habits and financial literacy among youth. Credit unions from across the country participate by holding challenges and activities designed to foster enthusiasm toward savings. This year, National Youth Credit Union Week is held from April 22-28, although CUNA promotes a National Youth Savings Challenge all month.

"Be a Credit Union Super Saver," which draws upon a superhero theme, was the 2012 National Credit Union Youth Week slogan. The Super Hero Staff of Kamehameha FCU celebrated Youth Savings Week by holding a Kinect Dance Central Super Saver Contest for the youth. Youth members who visited the credit union had a chance to show off their Superman dancing skills and the winner took home a Game Stop gift card. Our Super Savers also received double punches on their punch cards for every deposit as well as special punch card sale prices on the youth savings prizes such as backpacks and MP3 speakers.

Good news from Hawaii Schools FCU

For the first time, Hawaii Schools Federal Credit Union participated in the Hawaii Foodbank’s Annual Food Drive. The credit union’s month- long employee food drive was a huge success! Weekly contests and incentives encouraged friendly competition and motivated staff to give. Hawaii Schools FCU’s 16 employees dug deep into their pockets and pantries to donate over 550 pounds of food to Hawaii Foodbank. With additional support from the Board of Directors and membership, Hawaii Schools FCU’s total donation to the Hawaii Foodbank was 660 pounds of food.

Hawaii Schools Federal Credit Union completed its second year of participation in the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, which is an effort to provide income tax preparation assistance to low-income individuals, handicapped, or the elderly. This year, Hawaii Schools FCU Controller Son Do assisted 160 individuals (members and non-members), which generated a total of $214,653 in tax refunds. In addition, the credit union gained 53 new members via its partnership with the Hawaii Alliance for Community-Based Economic Development (HACBED) that offered a $25 incentive for opening a new share savings account. The IRS recently presented the credit union with a Community Service Leadership Certificate of Appreciation for Do’s VITA Program efforts.
