Improvements based on your feedback will be apparent at this year’s annual convention. League staff has been working for nearly a year on addressing concerns and making changes based on evaluations from last year’s convention. It is our desire that the 74th Hawaii Credit Union League Annual Convention, April 26-28 at the Hilton Waikoloa Village, will exceed your expectations.

One of the more noticeable improvements involves food and beverage service. A brunch buffet will be added to the Friday morning schedule, instead of a Continental breakfast and box lunch. A delicious array of hot and cold entrees provides a satisfying mid-morning meal for conventioneers. A similar brunch buffet will also be served on Saturday.

Holding the line on cost while presenting a fabulous dining experience at the Saturday night banquet is always a challenge. However, League staff has tirelessly negotiated the best possible pricing for a sumptuous dinner menu. Banquet service issues at last year’s convention has been and will continue to be addressed with the hotel staff to ensure an exceptional banquet experience.

Annual convention registration is now open! Please join your credit union peers for what promises to be a wonderful time of learning, networking, and fun. Registration materials were sent out in January and can also be accessed on the League’s web site. Registration deadline is March 16.

Ben and Maila to bring vibrant harmonies to convention banquet

Plans are well underway for the Hawaii Credit Union League 74th Annual Convention from April 26-28, 2012 at the Hilton Waikoloa Village.  From the golf tournament to the impressive speaker line-up, this promises to be an outstanding event for Hawaii’s credit unions.

Your League is pleased to announce Ben Vegas and Maila Gibson will provide the Friday night banquet entertainment. Ben Vegas and Maila Gibson have been performing together for over 10 years. Maila’s silky vocals and Ben’s guitar artistry bring new life to adult contemporary and contemporary Hawaiian music.

You can find them entertaining monthly at Gordon Biersch or at a friend or family member's wedding. In May of 2010, they released “Forevermore,” an album of modern love songs to honor the many brides and grooms who have invited them to share in their special day.

Separately, they've recorded their own albums and have their own musical accomplishments. Ben's hit songs include “Puanani” and “Maile Lei.” He is often called upon by some of Hawaii’s most notable artists to play guitar. Maila's a Hawaii Music Awards winner, a five time Na Hoku Hanohano Award nominee, and was featured on two Grammy nominated recordings with the popular Hawaiian recording group Ho’okena.

The official HCUL 74th Annual Convention brochure and registration forms will be in the mail on January 13. Don’t miss this event!

About 300 credit unions disappear per year. At this pace, there will only be 5,000 credit unions in 10 years. The end result will be strong, growing credit unions for years to come.

CUNA President/CEO Cheney to address HCUL annual convention

YOUR LEAGUE IS pleased to welcome Bill Cheney as the keynote speaker at the 74th Hawaii Credit Union League Annual Convention. Cheney will address convention participants during the Opening Ceremony on Friday, April 27, 2012 at the Hilton Waikoloa Village.
Bill Cheney is president and CEO of the Credit Union National Association (CUNA), the largest and most influential advocacy organization for credit unions in the United States. CUNA represents nearly 90 percent of the nation’s 7,500 state and federally chartered credit unions that together provide affordable, cooperatively owned financial services to more than 93 million Americans.
Under Cheney’s leadership, CUNA has focused on strategies to further expand credit unions’ political involvement and grassroots mobilization capabilities; reducing the growing and costly regulatory burden that too often hinders service and efficiency at credit unions; and raising consumer awareness and understanding of credit unions through coverage in state, local and national media as well as through a new consumer web site, www.aSmarterChoice.org
After just one year at CUNA, Cheney was named by CEO Update, the Washington-based newsletter for association and nonprofit executives, as one of the top association CEOs of 2011, the only trade group executive from the financial services industry to make the list.
Cheney became president and CEO of the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) in July, 2010, succeeding former CEO Dan Mica, A credit union veteran, Bill has a quarter century’s experience within the movement, including in 1987 in Texas (his home state) with Security Service FCU in San Antonio (which today holds more than $5 billion in assets and 600,000 members).
Ten years later (in 1997), after achieving the position of executive vice president, Cheney was named president and CEO of Xerox FCU (today known as Xceed FCU) in El Segundo, Calif. During nine years at the helm of the credit union, Cheney guided the credit union’s growth to more than $800 million in assets (from $350 million), growing the credit union’s membership to include operations in nine states, including California, New York, Florida, Texas and Illinois.
In 2006, the California/Nevada Credit Union Leagues tapped Cheney as its president and CEO. While overseeing the combined organizations’ operations, Cheney is credited with building the Leagues’ affiliation while improving its operational efficiencies.
Additionally, he has served as Treasurer of the American Association of Credit Union Leagues (AACUL), Chairman of the CUNA World Leadership Development Committee, member of the board of trustees of the Western CUNA Management School, member of the board of directors of the Richard Myles Johnson Foundation, and joined World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) delegations to Mexico, Poland, China, and Haiti.
