In the beginning...

In 2027, the Hawaii Credit Union League marks 90 years of service. The League traces its roots to 1936, when Hawaii’s first credit unions formed. On December 3, 1936, representatives from 14 newly chartered credit unions signed the League’s preamble, constitution, and by-laws.

The League was officially established on January 12, 1937, at the Central YMCA in Honolulu, with 13 credit unions represented and N. D. Lindeberg leading the effort. Early leadership included C. A. Woolward as president and B. M. Johnson as managing director, with Lance S. Barden serving as honorary president.

By 1938, the first annual meeting was held, a budget was approved, and the League began building its foundation. The organization grew steadily, becoming full-time in 1939 and expanding its operations and influence across the islands.

Key milestones followed: incorporation in 1956, construction of the League building completed in 1963, and 100% credit union affiliation by that same year. The League continued to strengthen the system, supporting growth in savings, dividends, education, and advocacy.

On June 2, 1961, land at 1654 South King Street was purchased for the Hawaii Credit Union League building. Construction was completed in May 1963. It is still the League's headquarters today.
For 90 years, the League has advanced Hawaii’s credit unions through advocacy, regulatory support, and education—upholding the cooperative spirit of “people helping people.” That spirit remains the foundation for the next 90 years and beyond.
