The Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA) Office of the Securities Commissioner announced the start of the 2018-2019 season of LifeSmarts in Hawaii.  LifeSmarts is a free, fun, educational competition brought to Hawaii by the DCCA Office of the Securities Commissioner in partnership with your League and run by the National Consumers League. It tests middle and high school students nationwide on real-life consumer issues through online quizzes and in-person competition.

High school teams can sign up now at www.lifesmarts.org to compete online.  Online competition will begin on October 22, 2018. Teams can compete online until 7:00 p.m. on December 7, 2018. At the end of the online competition, scores will be tabulated, and the top four scoring teams will be invited to the state championship that will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at UH Manoa Campus Center Ballroom. The winning team will represent Hawaii at the national competition in Orlando, Florida from April 13-16, 2019.

Team Iolani - 2018 LifeSmarts Champions!

In April, the Iolani School team represented Hawaii placing second at the 2018 National LifeSmarts Championship in San Diego, California. A total of 34 teams from across the nation competed in the 24th annual high school consumer education competition.

What does LifeSmarts teach?

LifeSmarts teaches consumer literacy by combining uniquely broad consumer content with a vocabulary- building framework.

LifeSmarts equips teens to enter the real world as smart and savvy consumers by challenging them to strengthen their knowledge in five key areas: personal finance, health and safety, the environment, technology, and consumer rights and responsibilities.

Students develop teamwork, self- esteem, verbal communication skills, and leadership abilities in this exciting competition format. Because many teens begin working during high school, LifeSmarts also introduces them to workplace protections and financial responsibilities.

LifeSmarts Aligns with Common Core Standards

LifeSmarts program content aligns with the Common Core State Standers Initiative.  To become college and career ready, students in LifeSmarts are introduced to real-world scenarios that require problem solving and core skills application. LifeSmarts content is also relevant to content literacy in the subject areas of social studies and science/technology.
