Kumu Kako'o

Hawaii's credit unions are there for Hawaii's teachers!
Picture
The Hawaii State Department of Education (HIDOE) recognizes the exciting, yet financially challenging transition new public-school teachers face as they begin their careers in Hawaii. The period between accepting a position and receiving the first paycheck can create undue stress and potential hardship.

New teachers, many of whom may be relocating to Hawaii or are recent college graduates, often face significant upfront costs such as housing deposits, moving expenses, and initial living expenses. The unavoidable delay in receiving their first paycheck can create a period of financial vulnerability, potentially impacting their well-being and their ability to focus on their crucial role in educating our keiki.

That’s where local credit unions have stepped up to offer financial assistance to teachers through the Kumu Kako’o (Teacher Support) Initiative. Participating credit unions are offering newly hired public school teachers a variety of loan options.

Teachers need not be a member of the credit union to apply. Kumu Kako’o offers a streamlined loan process designed to expedite funds to applicants.

Kumu Kako’o illustrates HIDOE’s efforts to attract and retain quality educators to Hawaii’s public schools and Hawaii credit unions’ commitment to communities and the people they serve.
