Credit unions in Hawaii and across the nation show people-helping-people in action

On August 8, 2023, wildfires swept through west and upcountry Maui, causing unprecedented devastation and utter destruction to the town of Lahaina. Very few buildings were left standing in the historic seaside town and many lost homes, businesses, or families and friends.

Several credit union employees lost everything in the fires and in the days and weeks that followed, found help from their credit union brethren not just on Maui, but across the state and the nation. The National Credit Union Foundation’s CUAid disaster relief program established a Maui wildfire initiative. Every penny donated to CUAid goes directly to credit union volunteers and employees affected by the Maui wildfires. Hundreds of thousands of dollars were raised from numerous credit unions, as well as industry trade associations and foundations.
