Hawaii credit unions participate in Kapiolani Children’s Miracle Network celebration
On March 12, Kapiolani Children’s Miracle Network held its annual Partner Celebration to commemorate the outstanding fundraising efforts of 2023. Staff from Aloha Pacific FCU, HawaiiUSA FCU, Hickam FCU and Hawaii Credit Union League represented Hawaii’s Credit Unions for Kids at the event.
The highlight of the event was the announcement of Hawaii’s 2024 Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Champion: Leila-Rose Coloma.
Leila-Rose spent her first months of life in intensive care units and underwent open-heart surgery before she turned 1. Now 7 years old, Leila-Rose Coloma is a survivor. That’s one of the reasons the loving little girl is the 2024 Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMN Hospitals) Champion for Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children.
Leila was born with a rare heart valve defect called Ebstein’s anomaly that affected her blood circulation. In addition, Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome made her heartbeat too quickly to effectively pump blood. Her little body wasn’t receiving the oxygen she needed.
Leila spent months in the intensive care units at Kapiolani. The dedicated staff worked to provide her oxygen and stabilize her heart rate. At 5 months old, she needed open-heart surgery.
Leila recovered. But a few years later, her parents noticed their now active toddler had trouble breathing after running or playing. She underwent her second open-heart surgery at the age of 3.
“It was still very stressful, but our Kapiolani doctors, nurses and staff constantly asked if we needed anything, made sure we understood what was happening and reassured us all along the way,” Leila’s mom Kayley said. “We have been to other hospitals, and it is not like that everywhere. Kapiolani is special.”

Hawaii’s Credit Unions for Kids mark fundraising
success in campaign to honor Martha Smith
Front L-R: Shelly Florentin (Honolulu Fire Department FCU, Colette Forcier (Kapiolani Children’s Miracle Network), Taylor Andrews-Wong (Honolulu Fire Department FCU). Back L-R: Scott Kaulukukui (Hickam FCU), Norman Goo (Aloha Pacific FCU), and Norman Okimoto (Hawaiian Financial FCU).
For Hawaii’s credit unions, Martha Smith was a tireless leader who supported our Kapiolani Children’s Miracle Network fundraising – especially our 5 In 5 campaign to fund the Diamond Head Tower of the medical center. Martha was the driving force behind developing the state-of-the-art Tower. We were all deeply saddened when Martha passed away in March 2021 at age 63.
In August 2021, Hawaii’s Credit Unions for Kids embarked on a fundraising campaign to honor Martha’s memory in a meaningful way. Because Martha was cancer patient at Kapiolani, we pledged to raise $140,000 to purchase a breast ultrasound (US) machine for the hospital.
US machines are diagnostic tools that can detect masses and breast cancer. It is safer than x-rays and mammograms, saves lives, can be used for patients with breast pain, and safe for patients under 30 years of age. This machine will be housed in Kapiolani’s Cancer Center.
In 2023, Hawaii’s Credit Unions for Kids exceeded its fundraising goal by raising $166,738.96. A check presentation was made on Friday, June 16, 2023 at the League.
Mahalo to all credit unions that helped make this campaign a success!

Congratulations to our Kapiolani Children's Miracle Network Champion Credit Unions
Since 1998, Hawaii’s credit unions raised $1,558,333 for Kapiolani Children's Miracle Network
Children are precious gifts and represent our hope for the future. Even those who don’t have kids are “aunty” or “uncle” to these little ones, whether related or not.
Since 1998, Hawaii credit unions have come together to support Kapiolani Children’s Miracle Network. Under a national initiative called Credit Unions for Kids, Hawaii credit unions large and small have united to raise funds for Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children—Hawaii’s only Children’s Miracle Network Hospital.
Meet Kalley-Mae Yee, Hawaii's 2023 Children's Miracle Network Champion
From “micropreemie” to healthy bundle of energetic joy, Kalley-Mae Yee named CMN Hospitals Champion
Kalley-Mae Yee weighed little more than a pound when she was born. Now, the vibrant 4-year-old girl from Hawai‘i Island is the 2023 Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMN Hospitals) Champion for Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children.
In the fall of 2018, Cherilyn and Kevin Yee were expecting their new baby. Cherilyn was due in the spring, but 10 days before Christmas — when she was just 23 weeks pregnant — she noticed something was not quite right. The Kapi‘olani Critical Care Transport team flew with her from Hawai‘i Island to Oahu where doctors at Kapi‘olani determined that her baby would need to be delivered right away.
Kapi‘olani’s team performed an emergency C-section. Kalley-Mae was just 11.81 inches long and weighed just 1 pound, 6.6 ounces when she entered the world. The tiny “micropreemie” was immediately placed in an incubator in Kapi‘olani’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). A ventilator helped her breathe and other specialized machines kept her alive.
Kalley-Mae spent 183 days in the NICU. The little girl endured open-heart surgery, two rounds of pneumonia, 10 blood transfusions, and subsequent surgeries on her heart and eyes. Kapi‘olani physicians, nurses, specialists, therapists, pharmacists and the entire medical staff offered their expertise, compassion and support.
“Every day was a journey. Some days, all we could do was try to get from morning to lunchtime, then from lunch to dinner, one step at a time,” Kalley-Mae’s dad, Kevin, said. “Everyone at Kapi‘olani was amazing. They explained every step, were always compassionate and made us feel like we weren’t just patients, but we were family.”
It’s because of kids like Kalley-Mae that Hawaii’s Credit Unions for Kids raises money for Kapi‘olani Children’s Miracle Network. Though funds raised, programs and services at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women and children help kids like Kalley-Mae survive and live happy, productive lives. Kapi‘olani is the only pediatric intensive care hospital in the State and Pacific equipped to treat and care for medically fragile “micropreemies” like Kalley-Mae. Every single dollar raised through Kapi‘olani Children’s Miracle Network stays in Hawaii to benefit Hawaii’s kids.
If your credit union would like to join your credit union ohana in fundraising, please contact Laurie Okawa at the League or Colette Forcier at Kapi‘olani Children’s Miracle Network. Free fundraising materials – from coin canisters to Miracle Balloons, poster and more – are available.

Special Kapiolani Children's Miracle Network Fundraiser
Through December, 2023 to honor life of Martha Smith
Create your own fundraising page!
Martha Smith was Hawaii Pacific Health Care System’s executive vice president of Oahu operations and chief executive officer of Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children, Pali Momi Medical Center, and Straub Medical Center. Sadly, she passed away in March of this year at age 63.
One of Martha’s most significant accomplishments was the development of the Diamond Head Tower at Kapiolani as a preeminent health care center for women and children. It was designed as a space that supported family-centered care for patients, families, and staff.
In the fall of 2013, Hawaii Credit Unions for Kids pledged to raise $500,000 in five years to help build the Diamond Head Tower. Martha was there at our “5 In 5” kickoff meeting, sharing the vision of the new tower and the architectural rendition of the building. In 2016, Martha led a “hard hat tour” of the tower construction site for League board and management. When Hawaii Credit Unions for Kids raised an astonishing $535,444 in less than five years, Martha expressed genuine appreciation when the check was presented, and the commemorative plaque was unveiled naming Hawaii Credit Unions for Kids as a contributing donor in the completed Diamond Head Tower.
To honor the memory of Martha Smith, Hawaii Credit Unions for Kids has embarked on a special fundraising initiative to benefit Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children. Martha was a cancer patient, and our goal is to raise $140,000 to purchase a breast ultrasound (US) machine for the hospital in her name.
Hawaii credit unions have held fantastic fundraising activities in the past and we look forward to great activities for this special initiative. Our fundraising initiative began on August 2, 2021 and will run through the end of December 2023. To date, we have raised $91,882 and with your continued support, we will reach our $140,000 goal by the end of this year.

In October 2013, Hawaii's credit unions pledged to raise $500,000 in five years (called the “5 In 5” initiative) for Kapiolani’s new state-of-the-art wing, which was under construction. By the end of 2016, the “5 In 5” posted an astonishing $536,444 in total donations—exceeding the original goal of $500,000 in less than five years!
Beyond the steel frames and beautiful glass windows of this building stands the real purpose of our 5 In 5 fundraising—to help bring healing to children in Hawaii and the Pacific. Upon reaching our fundraising goal, a plaque was installed in the new rehabilitation reception room of the hospital. It proudly bears the name “Hawaii’s Credit Unions for Kids” and stands as a lasting reminder of all the fundraising efforts of Hawaii’s credit unions.
